We are in a high season of alarmism over artificial intelligence. “Mitigating the risk of (human) extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war,” warns an open letter last week from the Center for AI Safety. That’s the second such open letter this year about the “existential” dangers posed by AI. Each was signed by a roster of top AI executives and computer engineers.
