First word BE in no doubt. What happened in Beijing over the weekend at the 20th congress of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) was no ordinary election, but a coronation. The party congress unveiled China’s new leadership, and its decision to extend Xi’s rule as China’s paramount leader for five more years until at least 2028. Xi, 69, will be the general secretary of the CCP for an unprecedented third term, breaking a two-term norm set by his predecessors.
