Play nice Re “Trump bans imports of some Canadian goods in response to Ottawa’s countertariffs” (Sept. 9): Actively taking on the world as it is, not waiting around for a world we wish to be, perhaps we should base our strategy on long-term U.S. protectionism. Instead of immediate, reactive tit-for-tat tariffs that will damage Canadian businesses, give one year’s notice for tariffs on goods and services with available non-U.S. suppliers. Give Canadian businesses time to source alternatives and encourage Canadian suppliers to provide them. Give support to scale up and meet increased demand. Then implement tariffs, or even import bans,…
