Enemies closer Re “Canada holds first defence co-ordination talks with China in more than eight years” (Sept. 8): I agree completely with retired general Wayne Eyre on the value of ongoing talks even with our adversaries, in order to prevent unintentional escalations or provocations in the presently fraught international climate. The same logic should underscore the importance of pursuing similar talks with Russia, given what I consider the total failure of diplomatic and economic isolation in response to the invasion of Ukraine, and the subsequent years-long war of attrition which may well expand to engulf all of Europe.
