The literary and artistic movement known as surrealism may have been inevitable. In the wake of the senseless death and destruction of World War I, old assumptions of logic and order seemed passé, if not ruinous. Freud’s 1899 book The Interpretation of Dreams had explored the sub-logical juxtapositions and possible meanings of dreams. Carl Jung was pondering archetypes in unconscious thought.
