Ireland’s participation in the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan was shrouded in controversy. Captain Roy Keane missed the tournament after being sent home following a blistering row with manager Mick McCarthy. Despite the Saipan Incident, the team successfully made it out of their group but lost 3-2 to Spain on penalties in the knockout phase.
