China's President Xi Jinping met veteran US diplomat Henry Kissinger in Beijing on Wednesday (July 19), calling him an "old friend" and discussing with him the ongoing low period of US-China ties. In the 1970s, Kissinger, now 100, served as the US Secretary of State and National Security Advisor under Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald R Ford. Among other things, he played a crucial role in the normalisation of ties between the US and China. Kissinger has visited China regularly since leaving office.
