China said it was conducting military drills off its coast in front of Taiwan after US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi warned her of possible plans for a trip to the island democracy. The ruling Communist Party’s military wing, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), was conducting “live-fire exercises” from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. near Pington Island in Fujian province, official Xinhua news agency said. The Maritime Security Administration warned ships to avoid the area. Such exercises usually involve artillery.
