Taiwan says it is ‘independent’ after Trump warns against formal declaration

Taiwan reaffirmed on Saturday that it is a “sovereign and independent democratic nation”, shortly after US President Donald Trump warned against any formal move towards independence following his talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing. In a statement, Taiwan’s foreign ministry said the island “is a sovereign and independent democratic nation, and is not subordinate to the People’s Republic of China”.
