Taiwan reaffirmed on Saturday that it is a “sovereign and independent democratic nation”, shortly after US President Donald Trump warned against any formal move towards independence following his talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing. In a statement, Taiwan’s foreign ministry said the island “is a sovereign and independent democratic nation, and is not subordinate to the People’s Republic of China”. The ministry also noted that since Trump returned to office, the United States had repeatedly stated that its policy towards Taiwan “remains unchanged”.
