Fiji’s prime minister says a Chinese military base in the Pacific would not be welcomed by the region as he floated signing a treaty with Australia to put bilateral relations on a firmer footing unaffected by “political whims” of changes in government. Addressing the National Press Club on Wednesday, Sitiveni Rabuka also declared support for Fijians to be recruited into the Australian military, saying it would provide much-needed employment opportunities and help set up ex-service people for comfortable retirements.
