Sir, - Senator Tom Clonan questions "received views" about the potential of a Russian military attack on an EU member state in the coming years (Letters, June 17th). He warns against "a growing clamour for an offensive posture within Europe - from a collective of voices who for the most part have zero experience of armed conflict themselves". Senator Clonan should listen more closely to the assessments of General Seà¡n Clancy who is the former chief of staff of the Defence Forces and the present chairman of the EU Military Committee.
