China launched air and sea drills around Taiwan on Saturday, in what it said was a “stern warning” after the island’s vice president visited the United States. William Lai — the frontrunner in Taiwan’s presidential election next year and a vocal opponent of Beijing’s claims to the island — returned Friday from a trip to Paraguay, during which he stopped in New York and San Francisco.
