An American lawyer was among the dozens of people arrested in Hong Kong on Wednesday in a crackdown on the city’s pro-democracy movement. John Clancey appears to be the first foreigner without dual citizenship to be arrested and detained under a draconian national security law imposed by China last June. Clancey is treasurer of Power for Democracy, an organisation that planned a primary for pro-democracy candidates in July, but which was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
